Going Live! Tax on Tartan!

Been a bit of a stooshie of tax in Scotland this week. If you hadn’t noticed, it all started with Patrick Harvie suggesting the government used the voted for taxation powers to lessen the cuts. Up stepped Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Moore who said the Scottish Government hadn’t been paying the bills and the power had lapsed, much to the surprise of pretty much everyone. Alex Salmond responded with good repost, but I’m sure opposition parties will try to make this one run and run.

So, as we can’t use SVR (Scottish Variable Rate) or the ‘Tartan Tax‘, perhaps we should be looking for alternative things to tax. In this government video, we find a few suggestions.

Can you think of any more ?

Donald Trump’s Golf War

I’m angry.  Angry after watching the BBC 2 Scotland’s “Donald Trump’s Golf War”.  Angrier than I thought I would be.  Because I knew about the story, I’d read about how Donald Trump had gone about his business to bully his way past council objections and blocks; because I knew about the Compulsory Purchase Order threats, I thought I knew what I was going to watch.

But I was wrong.  Until I watched the program I had no real idea of the trouble and strife hanging over Michael Forbe and the Milnes.  The program’s ending with David and Moira on the beach in tears had me choking up too.  Forcibly evicting someone from their home in the name of a private golf club is just despicable.  No wonder the Tripping Up Trump campaign have called it the Trumpland Clearances.

This is aside from the fact that an area of outstanding natural beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest that is being destroyed.  Not for a golf club really.  For a hotel and a housing estate.

Trump has nothing in his life except money.  The documentary showed him displaying objects he had bought.  They were all trophies or memorabilia of the achivements of others.  He cannot understand why the residents don’t want his money to move out.

Watch the program on the BBC iPlayer when it is available.

But also follow this series of videos on Vimeo by Jon Pullman.

I urge you to get involved. Head over to the Tripping Up Trump website for more information.

Sunday Scotland: Remembrance

War Memorial on Remembrance Day, originally uploaded by Sandihal.

At the Korean War memorial, 11th day, 11th month, shortly after the 11th hour.

A memorial unique in Britain, the Scottish Korean War Memorial lies in a peaceful location at Witchcraig, to the southwest of Beecraigs Country Park, 1¼ miles (2 km) east of Torphichen in West Lothian. Comprising a small wooden pagoda, surrounded by 110 Korean pine trees (one for every ten Britons who died in the conflict), 1090 Birch trees (one for each of the fallen) and picnic tables along a pathway named United Nations Avenue. This avenue is surrounded by 21 trees, representing the twenty-one nations involved in the UN force in Korea. The traditional Korean pagoda contains lists of those who died in the conflict, the vast majority of whom were young National Servicemen. Maintained by the Scottish Korean War Memorial Trust, the site opened on 27th June 2000, marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the war.

Going Live!: Nick Predicted a Riot

Dominating the political world this week was the Student Tuition Riots, the clip below is the moment the fire extinguisher was thrown down.

Can’t be many riots where the rioters boo wanton destruction.

Perhaps a bigger political fail for Scotland this week was the voting down of the minimum pricing of alcohol in the vaguely titled Alcohol Etc. (Scotland) Bill. Video here. At least they were specific about which country the seemingly random collection of stuff, stash, slugs, tipples, nips, swigs, Etc. and so on.

Green things grow on trees

The Scottish Green Party conference was this weekend and I was able to follow along on Twitter.  Interesting stuff.  James outlines the parties position on revenue-raising as opposed to cuts at Better Nation.  Suitably Despairing sums up conference with a thank you post, quoting Caroline Lucas :-

“If the planet were a bank it would have been saved years ago”

The more I think about it, the more I wonder why there are not more Scots supporting independence (or at least further devolution).  As Joan Mcalpine points out, if its okay for the Isle of Man, why isn’t it for Scotland ?  Bella Caledonia  talks about Trident pointing out :-

“While taxpayers north of the border subsidise defence over-concentration in the South of England, neighbouring independent Scandinavian nations have more bases and aircraft than the UK has in Scotland”

Bella also talks about Scotland’s wave power and a magic trick from the government on green financing.

Luckily, one of the things in Holyrood’s control is the ownership of Scotland’s forests.  Given that huge areas of England’s woodland is to be sold off,  it’s reassuring to know that this won’t be happening up here. Or is it, seen as it was only last year that the SNP were thwarted in similar plans?

I would advise anyone with a passing interest in the forests of Scotland to catch up on an excellent BBC program hosted by Dr. Iain Stewart, Making Scotland’s Landscape, 1. Scotland’s Trees (available to the 5th December 2010)

Sunday Scotland: Sunny Autumn Morning

Sunny Autumn Day, originally uploaded by Paul Freeman.

Just another walk in the woods near our house on a sunny autumn morning. Sometimes when you think about Scotland and beauty of the mountains and lochs, you can forget the natural beauty closer to home.

People often see West Lothian from the M8 and see bings and human scars, but really it is a very attractive area when you step into the countryside.

Going Live! Fully Charged Nemesis electric supercar

Very little time for blogging this week, so nothing more than the scheduled posts I’m afraid. Just moved offices at work and have been very busy.

This weeks video is of Ecotricity’s Dale Vince new supercar. Ecotricity are my electricity supplier and as the name implies are a green electricity company, building wind farms to supply their electricity.

Robert Llewellyn is simply a legend of Red Dwarf and Scrapheap challenge. I was a big fan of his internet series, Car Pool which has now transferred to the TV screen on Dave.

Fully Charged is his new internet series exploring electric car, partly created as a response to Top Gear’s shambolic review of a Tesla.
